International Community Development What we Do

Our Approach to International Community Development:

Sinkunia Community Development Organization is committed to empowering individuals and groups through building capacity to undertake sustainable community development. Our grass roots approach is rooted in the perspective and experience of the people affected by the problems, not professionals or outsiders. Those closest to the problem are mobilized to take action by using internal and external resources to actualize their goals.

Our aim is not only to solve problems but to develop the capacities of individuals and communities to recognize conditions that affect them and take steps towards solving them.

Asset-based, capacity focused and relationship empowered partnerships empower professionals and communities to jointly work towards solving the problems in their communities and build the capacity they need to prevent recurring issues.

Sinkunia Community Development Organization does not believe in the “handout” approach which only creates dependencies and perpetuates the cycle of poverty. SCDO’s fundamental belief and practice is to build the leadership capacity of the individuals and groups we work with and engage communities in sustainable long-term development.

To build this capacity, SCDO:

1. Micro-credit for Low Income Women:

The purpose of the micro-credit scheme is to relief poverty and empower local community women to become financially independent and self-reliant. The Sinkunia Community Development Organization provides financial support in the form of micro-credit/soft loans on

a rotating basis to low income women in the communities in which we operate in Africa.

The micro credit enables the women to engage in income generating activities. The profit generated from the credit is used to finance the education of their children, feed their families and ploughed back into the community for local community development. The micro-credit scheme is administered by a seven (7) member committee including two representatives from the local chiefdom administration.
