Issa Kamara, MSW, RSW Executive Director
Issa Kamara is the Founder and Executive Director ofthe Sinkunia Community Development Organization (SCDO). He was born and raised in “Wulumbu”; a small, remote and poverty-stricken community (hamlet) located about three miles north-west of Sinkunia.
He obtained a Bachelor's degree in Economics from the University of Sierra Leone and pursued further studies in Canada, and obtained a Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Manitoba. Prior to fleeing the crisis in his native country, Issa worked with the government of Sierra Leone as a civil servant in the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Country Planning. He was also involved with a United Nations Housing Project, “Capacity Building for Effective Housing Delivery” as National Counterpart-Housing Economist from 1997- 1999. In this capacity, Issa worked relentlessly for the improvement of slum and squatter settlements in the city of Freetown, Sierra Leone.
In Canada, Issa has worked with various Social Services/immigrant serving organizations in Winnipeg and later Edmonton as a Social Worker, Counsellor, Community Developer, and Cultural Diversity Advocate. Issa was recognized with the CTV Citizen of the Year Award in August 2011 for his contribution to the promotion, awareness, understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity in Edmonton. As Executive Director, Issa works with the Board to carry out programming and the administration of the society.
