Computer Literacy Class

Sinkunia’s Computer Literacy Classes are an innovative response to the technological and employment challenges faced by immigrant communities. By equipping participants with essential computer skills, this program helps bridge the gap between technology and unemployment, empowering individuals to meet the demands of today’s job market.

The classes operate as an open house, walk-in, and entirely free initiative, welcoming both youth and seniors. Participants gain hands-on experience with basic computing tools, such as Microsoft office, word processing, spreadsheets, email navigation, Canva designs, social media, and online research. These skills enhance their employability and increase their confidence in navigating the digital world, a critical aspect of integration and personal growth.

With an average of 15 participants attending every Tuesday, the program creates a welcoming space for interactive learning, fostering collaboration and interaction among diverse age groups. By addressing digital literacy, Sinkunia supports participants in achieving personal and professional goals, making a tangible impact on their lives and the broader community.

This initiative is a testament to Sinkunia’s commitment to empowering individuals, reducing barriers, and ensuring that no one is left behind in our rapidly evolving technological landscape. This program is made possible by the dedication of our team and the generous support of our partners and collaborators.

The Sinkunia Garden and Fall Harvest celebration was a remarkable event that brought our community together to celebrate the bounty of our summer garden. The harvest, which included an impressive array of fresh produce such as tomatoes, pumpkins, potatoes, carrots, peppers, onions, beans, corn, strawberries, okra, and garlic, was shared with community members who joined the occasion.

The turnout was incredible, with youth, seniors, and families coming together to enjoy the fruits of collective effort. Several esteemed organizations, including the Rotary Club, HT-SACA, Edmonton Native Plant Society, Sihle Sizwe, African Center, and AIWCC, lent their support and presence, elevating the event to extraordinary success.

Adding to the day’s excitement were breathtaking performances by the Jumbo Brothers of Kenya, whose captivating dances and acrobatic displays left attendees thrilled and energized.

The event embodied the spirit of togetherness, celebrating the shared labor that nourishes both our community and the connections within it. It was a true testament to the power of collaboration, creating lasting memories for everyone involved.

At Sinkunia, fostering safe, inclusive communities is at the heart of our mission. Our Building Safer Communities Project is a proactive gun and gang violence prevention initiative designed to empower youth and create awareness about the risks and realities of gang recruitment and organized crime. Recognizing the vulnerability of young people to such influences, this initiative provides a positive and supportive environment that steers them toward healthier choices.

Partnering with several organizations, the project offers a holistic approach to prevention. Youth are engaged in dynamic activities such as basketball, badminton, and other recreational games, providing an alternative to negative influences while promoting teamwork, discipline, and self-confidence. Beyond sports, we focus on education and personal growth through tailored youth education sessions, one-on-one counseling, and interactive workshops. These components equip participants with the knowledge, resilience, and life skills needed to make informed decisions and avoid paths leading to violence or crime.

This impactful program draws an average of over 300 participants annually, reflecting the trust and enthusiasm of the community. By creating a safe space for recreation, dialogue, and learning, Sinkunia is not just preventing violence but also nurturing future leaders and change-makers who will contribute positively to their communities. The Building Safer Communities Project stands as a testament to what collaboration, dedication, and community-focused initiatives can achieve.

Cultural Heritage festival

The Third Sinkunia Cultural Heritage Festival occurred on July 13th, 2024, at the Bosco Foundation (behind the main building).

This vibrant event provided a unique opportunity for the Balwin and Belvedere communities to unite and celebrate their rich cultural diversity. The festival was further enriched by inspiring speeches from distinguished guest speakers, including a Member of Parliament (MP), a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), representatives from the African Centre, university students, and members of the Sinkunia youth group. Their thoughtful words emphasized the importance of cultural preservation and community unity.

The event featured engaging activities for all age groups, such as Henna art, a bouncy castle, a fashion show, a petting zoo, drama performances, bead-making workshops, and an energetic Socafit Team dance. Attendees were captivated by the Marimba Band and drummers, who delivered outstanding entertainment throughout the day.

Guests enjoyed an array of exquisite cuisines representing various cultures and admired the colorful, traditional attire on display. Seniors Quilting Project

The Seniors Quilting Project is a vibrant and inclusive initiative that brings together seniors from diverse backgrounds to engage in the creative art of quilting, share life experiences, and mentor younger generations. This unique program is more than just a craft, it’s a celebration of stories, cultures, and connections. Each quilt design created by participants tells a meaningful story, reflecting their rich pasts, personal experiences, and cherished memories.

Held every Wednesday, the program provides a safe, interactive space where an average of 40 seniors come together weekly to express themselves creatively and foster a sense of community. Through quilting, participants not only create beautiful and intricate designs but also engage in conversations that bridge generational gaps and cultivate understanding. These shared experiences and mentoring opportunities provide youth with valuable insights and life lessons while empowering seniors to remain active contributors to society.

The initiative also addresses the challenges of isolation often faced by retirees and seniors living alone. By creating a welcoming and supportive environment, the Seniors Quilting Project helps prevent loneliness and encourages personal growth, social connection, and emotional well-being.

The Seniors Quilting Project stands as an indication of the power of creativity and connection in building stronger, more inclusive communities. It continues to grow, welcoming everyone to join and contribute to this beautiful tapestry of shared humanity.

ROTARY YEG Passport Club

SUMMER CAMP 2022

This is a detailed narrative of the 2022 Summer Camp

SUMMER CAMP 2021

Sinkunia youth over the Spring and Summer of 2021 have been sampling Digital Stories from different genres. Through that, they have created their own stories of immigrating to Canada.

These 2 to 5 minutes stories will cause all of us to reflect, appreciate and do more in the fight for inclusion, equity, respect, and diversity in our communities.

These stories support other new immigrant youth who may be going through the same challenges.

Sinkunia Collective Garden Project

Sinkunia Team and participants in collaboration with partner organizations, City of Edmonton officials as well as individuals from the neighborhood participated in our collective harvest event. Everyone went home with bags of produce from the garden.
